About
My name is John Van Horn, and I’m a web developer and software engineer living in the Dallas, Texas area. I specialize in applications built on the Adobe Flash platform, but am familiar with most other front-end techonologies including xhtml, css, and javascript. I also can’t live without a shell. I’m fascinated by problem solving through programming, design patterns, and good, sweet, clean code.
I graduated in 2005 from The Art Institute of Dallas with a degree in Multimedia design. My first real job was in advertising at Tribal DDB here in Dallas, where I worked on projects for clients such as Frito Lay, Pepsi, American Airlines, Product Red, and Nokia.
In 2007, I left the entertaining but lucrative world of advertising to join the video platform team at Yahoo! – where I am currently employed. I’m very fortunate to work with such a talented group of engineers, and learn something new every day.

About this site
This site is built with Wordpress, and uses an original theme. I have several plugins installed including ig syntax hilite for displaying source code; a slightly modified version of the delicious for wordpress plugin for grabbing my delicious bookmarks; and a slightly modified version of mytwitter for grabbing my twitter timeline. I use Dreamhost for hosting, where I enjoy the greatness of LAMP, shell access, and Subversion for source control.
